At Pace Benicia we strive to increase opportunities for social interactions and learning experiences for the individuals we serve, both at the day program and in the community. We work towards achieving these goals through the sharing of our many talents and with the support and participation of family and the Benicia community. We provide a diverse curriculum and work opportunities for our participants.
Our goal is to continue developing a variety of educational, recreational and work opportunities for the participants both in the community and here at the day program. We expand our educational knowledge by using the Weekly Reader publications that provide current events, social studies and historical information. This curriculum is very popular with the majority of our participants. In addition, we use "Handwriting Without Tears" a participant driven handwriting program. This program focuses on the development of fine and gross motor sills along with letter awareness.
We continue to offer a number of work experiences for our participants. They have the opportunity to do a variety of job tasks at program and at community businesses including Round Table Pizza, the Village Plaza office complex, Not Just Baskets and Kinder's.
In the areas of recreational/community activities we have added a yogalates (a combination of yoga and pilates) class at “From The Core” a local exercise studio. Participants attend classes there twice a week. We also attend a weekly Exercise and Sports class and a Music and Movement class provided by the City of Benicia Recreation Department at the Benicia City Gym. In addition, we have a Pace Benicia garden plot at the Benicia Community Garden. We have been very successful in the bounty we have produced which includes tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, eggplant and a variety of fresh herbs including basil and parsley. The participants in our cooking classes have enjoyed making a variety of foods with the produce from the garden.
We look forward to continuing with our current activities and developing new and exciting curriculum and community activities over the next year.
